Declare Your Portfolio “Full”

The “one in, one out” rule.

At some point, your portfolio needs to stop being a project.

I spend a lot of time looking for good companies. I enjoy researching businesses, finding new ideas, and thinking about how they might fit into my portfolio.

But I’ve started to wonder if there is a point where looking for more becomes counterproductive.

There will always be another good company. Another interesting ETF. Another stock that makes you wonder if your portfolio could be a little better.

That can make investing feel like a project that never ends.

So I’ve been thinking about a simple idea:

What if you just declared your portfolio full?

What does “full” mean?

I don’t think there is a magic number.

Maybe your portfolio has five individual stocks. Maybe it has ten, or 20, or 30. Maybe you have a few ETFs alongside them.

The number isn’t really the point. The point is deciding that you have enough.

For me, this fits with the way I’ve been trying to invest. I want a portfolio that is simple enough to understand and small enough that I actually know why I own everything in it.

At some point, that means I have to stop making room for every new idea.

If something comes in, something has to go

This is the rule I’m starting to use.

If my portfolio is full and I find a company I really like, I don’t automatically buy it. If I want to add it, something else has to come out.

That changes the question.

Instead of asking, “Is this a good company?” I have to ask, “Is this company good enough to replace something I already own?”

That’s a much harder question.

There are plenty of good companies I could own. I don’t need to own all of them. I need to own the ones I understand, believe in, and want to follow for a long time.

I can still be curious

Declaring my portfolio full doesn’t mean I’m going to stop researching.

I still want to learn about new businesses. I’ll still find companies that interest me. Some of them might eventually make it into my portfolio.

But research doesn’t have to lead to ownership.

Research can be unlimited. Ownership doesn’t have to be.

I can follow a company for a year or two without owning it. I can learn about the business and see how it develops. I can wait.

That takes some pressure out of investing.

Maybe you already have enough

I think this is the part that interests me most.

We spend a lot of time asking what we’re missing. What stock should we add? What sector are we missing? What ETF would make the portfolio better?

But maybe the better question is:

Do I already have enough?

If you have a portfolio you’re comfortable owning for the next ten years, maybe you don’t need another holding.

Maybe it just needs time.

That’s where I’m trying to get with my own portfolio. I don’t want to stop being curious about investing. I just don’t want every new idea to become a reason to change what I already own.

So I’m starting with a simple rule:

My portfolio is full.

If something new deserves a place, something else has to make room.

Maybe that’s all a minimalist portfolio really needs.

Not the fewest possible holdings. Not a perfect portfolio.

Just enough.
